The Health Service & Population Research Department Seminar Series present:

Rethinking the Design and Evaluation of Digital Mental Health Treatment

There is a growing body of evidence from randomized controlled trials that digital mental health interventions, including apps, are effective in treating common mental health disorders. However, in spite of many attempts, real world implementation in healthcare systems has generally not succeeded. This talk will describe a program research at our center focused on overcoming the research-to-practice gap. This includes user centered design work that has uncovered some of the reasons for those failures as well as solutions, our IntelliCare platform-based approach to digital mental health that has emerged from that design work, and implications of this work for our approach to digital mental health research.

David C. Mohr, PhD, trained as a psychologist, is Professor of Preventive Medicine in the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, with appointments in Departments of Psychiatry and Medical Social Sciences. He is also the Director of Northwestern University’s Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies (CBITs; www.cbits.northwestern.edu). Dr Mohr’s work lies at the intersection of behavioral science, technology, and clinical research, focusing on the design and implementation of interventions that harness wireless and web-based technologies to promote mental health and wellness. The overarching goal of this work is to sustainably implement digital mental health interventions in real-world care settings. Dr Mohr’s research has been consistently funded for more than 25 years by the United States National Institutes of Health, numerous other federal agencies, and foundations, resulting in over 225 peer-reviewed publications, and more than 25 book chapters.
